There is higher demand for used Torah
scrolls today because of the cost of a new Torah. The
customary cost of a fully restored, strictly Kosher used
Torah ranges from $8,000 to as high as $15,000.
Most of the used Torahs available today were written
after the Holocaust. Occasionally, we find very
old European, pre-Holocaust Torahs.
For the most part, the Torahs which we procure were written in
the 1950’s and 1960’s. Generally, these Torahs were
written in Israel, and used in Israeli synagogues,
schools, yeshivot, etc. Many of these Torahs were brought
to cities across America, for use in American
synagogues.
Used Torahs are often found in synagogues located in
small towns, which were forced to close as the communities
lost members and ceased to exist. In addition, many
used Torahs become available when synagogues merge or when synagogues
have financial problems and sell their assets.
In selling used Torahs, we employ the same principles
as with new Torahs. Used Torahs require a substantial
financial investment and we will send you the entire
scroll for inspection and consideration. If the Torah
requires restoration work, we will describe the specific
work we think is required. The cost will be for the
fully restored Torah and will include new atzei chaim
and a mantel.
